Sexual health is about more than just safe sex

Sexual health is not just about safe sex, it’s about the complete package. Regular, healthy sex is fun and pleasurable and creates a unique opportunity to experience intimacy and connection with your sexual partner. Sex is also very good for your physical and mental health and wellbeing. The benefits are endless, so I’ve put together a list of my top favourites. Regular Exercise

The most basic health benefit of sex is regular exercise. Sex counts as cardio! That’s right, a sex session can burn up to 250 calories, depending on the length of the session. Regular exercise leads to lower blood pressure and is a great workout for your abs, buttocks, muscles in your back and thighs. I can’t think of a better excuse to skip my morning walk and work up a sweat in bed.

A Healthy, Youthful Glow

Sex does wonders for the complexion and naturally creates a healthy post-sex glow. Rumour also has it that people who enjoy regular healthy sex appear 10 times younger than their actual age! Regular sex promotes the release of testosterone and oestrogen, both of these hormones keep the body looking, and feeling, younger and more vibrant.

Stress Less

During sex, a bunch of oxytocin and endorphins are released into your brain – these are the feel-good hormones that activate pleasure and create feelings of intimacy and relaxation. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of post-sex bliss that floods your body whilst resting after a great sex session. Soak up those feelings and take them into the rest of your day.

Confidence Boost

Sex is quite possibly the best way to boost your confidence and feel fabulous. Desiring another, and feeling desired by your partner, is a sure fire way to feel fabulous. Great sex is empowering and pleasuring your partner is an amazing feeling.

Better Sleep

Orgasm is quite possibly the best way to lull yourself to sleep. During orgasm, the hormone prolactin is released into the brain. Research shows that prolactin levels are higher during sleep, which could suggest a strong relationship between the two. On the other hand, a wild sex session may have the opposite effect and your energy may be boosted after sex. Either way there’s nothing wrong with a high-energy sex session to end the day.
